A brand new 2022 Work Trend Index from Microsoft publishes findings from a study of 31,000 people in 31 countries, along with an analysis of trillions of productivity signals in Microsoft 365 and labor trends on LinkedIn.

47% of respondents say they are more likely to put family and personal life over work than they were before the pandemic. In addition, 53%—particularly parents (55%) and women (56%)—say they’re more likely to prioritize their health and wellbeing over work than before.

A new study from Gallup in FastCompany shows that 42% of the reasons people are quitting are tied to how they feel about their bosses and organizational cultures. And low engagement is specifically present when workers conclude they aren’t growing, appreciated, or treated with care and respect. This fits with our own research with several companies that shows that Career Development is the number one reason people join a company and the top reason (or lack thereof) for why they leave. The percent of people feeling their companies care about their wellbeing has already dropped from a Pandemic high of 50% to 35% today.

A New York Times study also says that in returning to the office, most people are still strongly concerned about the lack of change in workplace culture. One person asks: “What have companies done to upskill senior leaders and managers so they’re going back into the office with empathy? Not one single person who re-enters the office in the next three months is the same as the one who left.”

The study shows that in the United States, 86 percent of Hispanic and 81 percent of Black knowledge workers, those who do non-manual work, preferred hybrid or remote work, compared with 75 percent of white knowledge workers. And globally, 50 percent of working mothers who participated in the studies reported wanting to work remotely most or all the time, compared with 43 percent of fathers.
